Description
The Food We Eat - Tomato Slice #1
Artwork # 11456
A look at a slice of tomato, created by pressing it in a 6x6 glass slide, and then scanning into the computer for processing.
Originally from Western South America, the tomato is the edible, often red, berry of the nightshade Solanum lycopersicum species.
The origin of its name is from the Nahuatl (Aztec language) word tomatl which gave rise to the Spanish word tomate, from which the English word tomato derived.
The tomato is consumed in diverse ways, raw or cooked, as an ingredient in many dishes, sauces, salads, and drinks. While tomatoes are fruits botanically classified as berries, they are considered culinarily as vegetables, to be utilized as an ingredient or side dish for savory meals.
